Transit and narration: the meanings of travel in Simpatia pelo demônio by Bernardo Carvalho

Abstract

This work proposes a reflection on the displacement of the protagonist Rato in the novel Simpatia pelo demônio, by Bernardo Carvalho. The objective is to problematize how the representation of transnational space, as an enunciative territory of the narrative, articulates itself into the composition of a character who, in the midlife crisis, seeks to live, in spatial wandering, homoerotic experiences and this search provokes a need for intimate fulfillment, whether through the lack of/re/knowledge of their weaknesses, or through the discovery of their ambiguous essence. From this, based on the propositions of Marc Augé (1994; 2006; 2010), Tim Cresswell (2006) and Doreen Massey (2015), the analytical focus focuses on actions and images of mobility present in the work, so that the implications contained in traffic they unfold into an existential wandering.
